Description
Dimitra combines tradition and authentic Arcadian atmosphere. Visitors had the opportunity to get up close to the old custom of burning the "Makaronas", which is revived with symbolism and a folk character. The picturesque village, with its stone architecture and historical depth, offered a unique experience filled with culture and tradition.
We depart at 06:30 in the morning from our city, Chalkida, where with the usual coffee stop, we arrive at the lady of Arcadia, Dimitsana. Dimitsana is an "outdoor museum" with dozens of mansion buildings, beautiful churches, and picturesque alleys that invite us to explore. Starting, we will observe the tall Clock behind Agia Kyriaki, as well as the village's reference point is the library. Walking through the alleys, we will find churches everywhere, as well as many mansions of important people. Finally, walking around the neighborhood of Platsa (around the Taxiarches church), we will see scattered ruins of the walls of ancient Teuthida. Of course, we will also observe the "Burning of the Macaron" custom here. The preparation of Makaronas is done secretly by the village's young men. During the parade, gifts are distributed while people dance to the music.
After the parade, Makaronas, filled with gunpowder, is hung in the central square, and there are loud bangs and flashes. After the burning, there is revelry to the sounds of traditional and folk music. Free time to explore and observe the custom. Also for our lunch.
Then early in the afternoon, we will take the road back to the beautiful Chalkida with beautiful memories and refreshed by the clean air of the area.
