Vienna is a city in the heart of modern Europe, known for its culture, as a city of Music and Arts that combines its classical and modern face.

Description

  • Gathering at Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos Airport and departure for the capital of Austria, the aristocratic Vienna. The city experienced great development during the period when the Habsburgs were elected, almost continuously for four consecutive centuries, rulers of the Holy Roman Empire. On our morning tour, we will see the famous Ringstrasse, which when built served as a ring road connecting the new artistic buildings with the public services when the defensive fortifications were demolished. We will admire the imposing Opera House, which opened in 1869 and remains the center of Vienna's cultural life, the Hofburg complex, which includes the imperial apartments, museum buildings, the Austrian National Library, the Winter Riding School, and the offices of the country's president. This was the seat of Austrian power for six centuries, where all the rulers aspired to leave their mark. We will also see the Parliament designed by architect Theophil Hansen and the neo-Gothic City Hall, the seat of the Vienna City and the local government, which was built between 1872 and 1883 with its massive central tower ending in a 3-meter statue of a knight with a spear. We also see the National Theater, the most prominent stage in the German-speaking world, originally built during the reign of Maria Theresa and later in the style of the Italian Renaissance, the atmospheric Karlskirche, and then the Belvedere, built as the summer palace of Prince Eugene of Savoy, the brilliant military commander whose maneuvers contributed to the crushing of the Turks in 1683. Following that is the Cathedral of St. Stephen, the city's landmark. Transfer to the hotel and check-in.
In the free afternoon, we suggest a first walk under the guidance of the leader, either alone to enjoy the magical festive atmosphere of the city.

  • Vienna looks like a fairy tale during Christmas time. At least a month before Christmas, large outdoor markets are set up to satisfy even the most demanding tastes. You can have a coffee at the atmospheric cafes Sacher, Landtmann, and Central, which are an integral part of Viennese life, or take a stroll along the main pedestrian shopping street, Kärtnerstraße, with its shops selling the amazing Mozart chocolates and liqueurs. You can also visit the Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the imperial family, which was named after a beautiful fountain that existed at that point. For enthusiasts of the genre, we recommend a stroll through the museum square and, if they are open, a visit to the Natural History Museum or the Museum of Art History, one opposite the other, and in between the Maria Theresia Square with her statue dominating the center of the square since 1888. In the evening, we recommend attending a festive music concert at the 1710 Auersperg Palace. There were the most glamorous dances and parties of the era, starring Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Sissy, while Mozart played the piano at the age of 6 for Empress Maria Theresa.

  • Free day at your disposal for further wandering in the Austrian capital.
Alternatively, we suggest a full-day excursion to Salzburg (minimum participation 20 people, cost 120€ adult / 80€ child -12 years old). Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, is located at an altitude of 425 meters and is the "Fairytale of Austria" with domes, bell towers, an imposing castle, a river, and snow-capped mountains in the background. The legend says that the city was founded by Bishop Rupert, who arrived here with Benedictine monks, and by Irish Bishop Virgil, who built the city's first cathedral. The city is famous for its annual, largest, and most important opera and theater festival in Europe, which began in 1920 and continues to this day. We will explore the beautiful old town located between the Mönchsberg and the Salzach River. UNESCO has declared Salzburg a World Heritage Site, built almost entirely in the Baroque style, which presents exceptional architectural uniformity. We will admire the Residenz Palace and Mirabell Gardens, the city's cathedral Dom, a model of Baroque church architecture north of the Alps, the old town hall at the end of a narrow medieval street, Residenz Square with the archiepiscopal seat and the 12th-century Abbey of St. Peter with the eponymous statue decorating the fountain (1673) in front of the church. Time at your disposal for a stroll or lunch. Return in the evening to Vienna. Another option is a trip to nearby Bratislava, Slovakia (minimum participation 20 people, cost 55€ adult / 40€ child -12 years old). The historic center with St. Martin's Cathedral, the old historic town hall, St. Michael's Gate, and Bratislava Castle, which dominates the city and we will see from the outside, will keep our interest high. Return early in the afternoon to Vienna.

  • After breakfast, we will set off on our excursion to the lush Vienna Woods, west of the capital, a popular destination for the Viennese. They cover an area of 1,250 square kilometers and are an ideal place for recreation as they are crossed by many hiking and biking trails. You will find interest in the Mayerling hunting lodge, known from the romance of Maria Vetsera and Prince Rudolf, which had a tragic end, with the causes of the tragedy unknown until today. We will visit the Heiligenkreuz monastery and learn about its history in the courtyard, and we will also make a brief stop in the picturesque spa town of Baden, on the eastern side of the Vienna Woods, with its 15 hot springs, known since Roman times. The city was rebuilt after the devastating fire of 1812, and many of the neoclassical and Biedermeier mansions date from that period.
Return to Vienna and free afternoon. For the evening, we recommend dinner at the traditional Viennese taverns of Grinzing, which will transport you to other eras, tasting this year's wine and local delicacies.

  • Our trip to Vienna ends today, and filled with impressions and rich images from our acquaintance with Renaissance and modern Vienna, we head to the airport for our morning return to Athens.
